Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Swimming Carnival

Our swimming carnival is held each year at Speers Point Pool for students in Year 3 - 6 in the first couple of weeks of the school year.  All students are encouraged to participate in the carnival and enjoy the day.  Heats and finals are held in freestyle and the form strokes.  The running of the junior/senior boy and girl relays completes the day.

From this carnival, students can qualify to represent the school at the zone carnival and can then progress to the Hunter Region and State Carnival.

Athletics Carnival

The school athletics carnival is held at the Hunter Sports Centre, Glendale in Term 2 and is attended by all students K-6. At the carnival the students participate in a range of field, track and novetly events.

The students are supported to develop their skills to give them confidence to participate in the events, through an athletics progran run every week in Term 1. This is coordinated by staff but parent volunteers assist with the delivery of the program.

From this carnival, students can qualify to represent the school at the zone carnival and can then progress to the Hunter Region and State Carnival.

Cross Country Carnival

The school cross country carnival is held in Term 1. It is a fundraiser for the P&C, requiring students to get sponsorship and earn individual and class prizes. This is a community event where parents line the course and encourage the students to do their best. The highlight is running through the finish line and receiving an iceblock!

Students can qualify to represent at zone, regional and state from this event.

Sport

All students K-6 participate in weekly sport on Fridays. At this time the students have the opportunity to apply the skills learnt during PE into a sport/game. A variety of games/sports are scheduled each term to provide the students with a broad experience.
